Sustainability

Our goals for a sustainable, socially conscious and ethical future.

A Sustainability Message from our CEO

As a company that has been around since 1855, Samuel has always been focused on sustainability. We know how important it is to plan for the future and we’re currently focused on making an impact in three key areas – the world we live in, our people and our business.

On this page, you'll learn more about our specific sustainability goals, the progress we've made to date and where we're headed as a company. To get started, view more detailed information below, download our Executive Summary at the bottom of this page or hear directly from our President & CEO, Colin Osborne, in this video message.

ENVIRONMENT

In 2021, we set a five-year goal to reduce our GHG emissions by 7.75% at 24 of our largest locations, with incremental annual goals along the way. We exceeded our 5% target for 2023, reducing our GHG emissions by approximately 10%.

SUPPORTING RENEWABLE ENERGY

With over 70 locations across North America, we need a lot of energy to keep Samuel operational and we want to ensure we use the cleanest energy possible, wherever possible, to safeguard the environment and our business. Click to learn more about our energy saving initiatives.

WATER STEWARDSHIP

In 2023, we signed an agreement to implement WAVE, a verified Water Stewardship program, at all of our manufacturing and technology locations, which are the facilities that use the most water. We will begin testing this program in 2024.

REDUCING LANDFILL USE

When it comes to reducing waste, we have several projects underway. We do traditional things like recycling, we find ways to reuse items like donating our old hardware, and our innovative team is always looking for new solutions too. Click below for more information.

SCOPE 1 AND SCOPE 2 EMISSIONS

We are pleased to reduce several key areas of Scope 1 and 2 emissions across the business in 2023, including gas consumption, Co2 emissions and electricity consumption. We are currently developing more detailed plans on Scope 3 emissions.

BIODIVERSITY

In 2023, we are looking for new opportunities to make our facilities more sustainable and began a partnership with Alvéole, who helped us promote environmental awareness and protect bees by bringing a beehive to our headquarters. Our pilot is currently underway, with potential to expand to other locations in the future.

BENEFITS

A key element of the sustainability of our business is the health and wellbeing of our employees. As a result, we offer a comprehensive benefits package, competitive pay, employee discounts and rewards for recognition.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Here at Samuel, safety is fully embedded in our culture. We know that we can’t succeed without our people and the most important thing is keeping them safe. In addition to requiring completion of regular safety training, we also strive to have a best-in-class DART (Days Away, Restricted, Transferred) rate.

EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT

Two-way communication is an important part of life at Samuel, and one of the ways we gather feedback from our team members is through our engagement survey. This is conducted every other year, with our next survey scheduled for 2024.

DEI

Offering our team members a warm, welcoming and inclusive environment has always been a top priority at Samuel, but we officially launched our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program in 2020. This program is focused on building teams that reflect the communities where we operate. Click below for more information.

VALUES AND ETHICS

We know that an important part of being a sustainable business is ensuring we are always operating honestly and doing the right thing. In fact, integrity is one of our five core values (along with respect, agility, courage and ownership). While this information is not publicly disclosed, we do have a number of robust ethic controls and programs in place.

Symbol Icon

LEADERSHIP

While every member of the Samuel team contributes to the success of our business, we also recognize the importance of having a talented, knowledgeable and diverse group of people leading the way.

Symbol Icon

COMPLIANCE

As part of our commitment to being honest and doing the right thing, we require our team members and our partners to review and acknowledge our Code of Conduct on an annual basis. Internally, this is also supplemented with training to ensure everyone has a full understanding.

RISK MANAGEMENT

We manage risk in a number of ways at the leadership level and within certain teams. One of the ways the entire business can contribute, however, is by completing our mandatory cybersecurity training, which is released every quarter.
