Achieving a single-piece waveguide suited for space.

 

This RF Waveguide was originally made up of multiple components with corresponding interface flanges and associated hardware with a mass of 275g.  Through an iterative design process, Burloak was able to dramatically reduce  the wall thickness of each element and eliminate the multi piece design of the individual parts reducing mass to 120g. 

In the second iteration we further consolidated the assembly into a single unified body thus eliminating the flanges and fasteners with a final mass of 75g.  This consolidation effort results in less failure points within the waveguide, dramatically reduced mass, reduced assembly cost and a much lower machining cost.  The part also is much more environmentally friendly due to the dramatic reduction in raw material inputs with AM.  Burloak has demonstrated that it can consistently produce highly defined interior geometries in complex RF structures in a wide range of RF frequencies with surface finishes that perform in family without further post processing.  Our superior surface finishes also contribute to excellent fatigue performance in structural flight components and our space heritage clearly demonstrates our pedigree.
