Job Description:

The Director, Health and Retirement Programs is responsible for day to day management of the company’s defined benefit plans, capital accumulation plans, health benefits, and wellness programs and services.    These responsibilities include the design, development, communication, implementation, and administration of the Company’s portfolio of plans. The Director, Health and Retirement Programs works under the direction of the VP, Health and Retirement Programs in support of the Company’s overall total reward strategy and objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAMS
• Participate in the design, implementation, and communication of benefit plans that attract and retain top talent;
• Regularly communicate with managers and employees to build awareness, understanding, and acceptance of benefit programs;
• Monitor vendor performance against established service agreements, reviewing reports, conducting performance meetings, and ensuring compliance with plan provisions;
• Manage all plan renewals; and responsibility for assessing, determining, and setting level of risk borne by the Company
• Provide timely communication on changes to plan to business leaders and plan members
• Conduct research on health insurance trends to benchmark benefits plan against best practices or evolving practices;
• Manage the short term and long term disability process and performance of related vendors
•Interpreting benefit policies and provide decisions on coverage issues

RETIREMENT PROGRAMS
• Actively participate in the management of our U.S. and Canadian defined benefit and capital accumulation retirement plans; [approx. $470 million in assets as at December 31, 2015]
• Work closely with retirement plan advisors, actuaries, solicitors and other subject matter experts to ensure legislative compliance and appropriate administration of our plans;
• Prepare reports and provide accurate data analysis as required;
• Prepare and/or participate in regulatory filings, plan audits, or other tax-reporting requirements as necessary;
• Develop and implement appropriate and effective communication tools for pension plan members;
• Analyze trends and research data related to pension to ensure that the company retains a competitive total rewards position in the marketplace;
• Stay up to date on industry trends and legislative changes that impact Company’s retirement practices.

TOTAL REWARDS MANAGEMENT
• Serve as subject matter expert on health, wellness and retirement programs within the Company
• Lead the roll out of new programs within the health and retirement area
• Contribute to special projects such as due diligence for acquisitions; diversities, reorganization

REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s  degree in Business or a related discipline required
• Human Resources (CHRL / PHR) designation would be an asset
• Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) or Certified Benefits Professional (CBP) designation preferred
• 5-7 years of hands-on experience in employee benefits and retirement program design, administration, compliance and governance
• A professional level of knowledge of pension and benefits legislation in Canada and the USA is required
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Detail oriented and ability to meet deadlines;
• Excelled numeracy and analytical skills;
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong relationship building and change management capabilities;
• Strong problem-solving skills in order to resolve complex issues;
• Solid understanding of accounting procedures as they relate to pensions;
• Prior experience in a unionized organization with multiple contracts;
• Proven ability to distill volumes of complex information into simple digestible communications
• Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.
• Fluency in English is required, fluency in French would be considered an asset
