SUMMARY & SCOPE:

Senior Buyer procures raw materials, bulk material and services used in the operation of the company, obtaining the highest quality goods at the lowest possible cost at the most favorable delivery terms, in accordance with company policies and procedures. Working with outside sales to create customer demand forecasts and participate in new product launch activities.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform daily analysis of inventory reports for inventory requirements from shop orders. Place purchase orders to meet company specifications.  Plan for the proper timing of purchases to meet production demands to minimize inventory levels and assist the Materials Manager.
  • Expedite out-of-stock items, ensuring that items are kept to a minimum.
  • Reschedule or defer parts, as necessary.
  • Select vendors and negotiate contract terms as to price, availability, and delivery.
  • Obtain the highest quality goods while emphasizing cost reduction. Promote substitutions when significant benefits can be achieved.  Work with Engineering and Quality Assurance to obtain approval for these substitutions.
  • Source and evaluate new vendors for their ability to meet the company's purchasing needs and quality standards.  Evaluate the vendor's quality systems for conformance to ISO standards.  Schedule and coordinate vendor visits.
  • Assist vendors in upgrading their company's standards for quality.
  • Monitor actual expenses against budgeted expenses.  Monitor inventory levels for assigned product categories.
  • Support Estimating, Sales, and Accounting personnel with sourcing new vendors and negotiating price and availability for the development of estimate.
  • Assist the Materials Manager or lead team tasks with projects related to the procurement   of materials and services for expedited deliveries as well as supervise assigned areas.

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Bachelor's Degree and 3 - 5 years related experience or an Associate's Degree and 6 - 8 years related experience; or a combination of education and progressively responsible work related experience.  APICS standards education.
  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret purchasing related documents such as catalogs, product-related literature, engineering drawings, technical books, manuals, inventory reports and vendor assessment analysis. Ability to write reports and correspondence related to procurement.  Ability to communicate effectively with vendors and other employees in the organization.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Skills: Ability to apply common sense and understating to carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form.  Ability to deal with and resolve problems vendors and other employees in the organization might have.
