Job Description:

Nelson Steel Technology designs and supplies equipment for the steel pickling industry.  The Mechanical/Instrumentation Technician – Field Services is primarily responsible for the instrumentation associated with this equipment as well as supervising the installation of the equipment. This position offers a wide variety of work, involving the design, supply, installation and operation of HCl pickling lines using modern technology and processes.  Once fully trained, the successful candidate will supervise installations of pickling lines at customers' sites in North America and abroad. The ideal candidate has the ability to work seamlessly with customers, contractors and employees.  You are proactive and comfortable working independently to plan, manage and complete office and on-site projects. This role will be based out of Samuel's Nelson facility in Stoney Creek, Ontario.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Specifying and reviewing bids for instrumentation, as well as reviewing the PLC design and making modifications to the functional description.  Managing instrumentation suppliers and their software design.

  • Preparing instrumentation and electrical drawings in AutoCAD Mechanical.

  • Supervise contractors during equipment installations for periods of up to four weeks at a time at customer's facilities worldwide.  Frequency of trips will vary depending on project load.

  • Good communication skills are required, as this position frequently interacts with customers, contractors and people who speak English as a second language.

  • Perform non-instrument related tasks pertaining to the business, as required.

  • Check drawings for different aspects of the pickling line including piping, pumps, P&IDs.



  • College or university education as an Instrumentation or Electrical Technician/Engineer

  • 5+ years of experience in instrumentation and industrial electrics

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment

  • Experience in construction or equipment installation would be an asset

  • Strong problem solving skills with respect to electrical and mechanical equipment

  • Experience with AutoCAD and MS Office

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Valid driver's license is required

  • Passport with no restrictions for worldwide travel is required

  • Piping and steam knowledge would be an asset

  • Experience with an ERP system would be an asset
