The history of Samuel, Son & Co., Limited is engrained in the environments in which we work and live.
The EnvironmentOur dedication to improving our environmental performance now and into the future can be seen from our large scale undertakings such as location certification to the international ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standard, to individual contributions promoted through Samuel’s “Think Smart, Think Green” guidelines.
The Samuel Group of Companies is committed to maintaining and improving our Environmental system and is governed by a
Corporate Environmental Policy. It is at Samuel's core business practices to continue to support, protect and enhance the natural environment by:
- Developing company-wide policies, guidelines, and procedures to help protect the environment;
- Using resources and research to identify environmental solutions and impact;
- Ensuring that planning, which aims to identify and evaluate environmental benefits and risks, takes place at the earliest stages in the decision making process;
- Undertaking compliance and enforcement actions to ensure consistency with environmental laws and practices;
- Supporting environmental monitoring and reporting to track progress over time;
- Using a wide range of initiatives, including strong partnerships, public engagement, strategic knowledge management, economic incentives and discentives to help promote the tenants of energy conservation and recycling of products.
Social Responsibility
As Ernest Samuel was known to say: “Our strength is our people” and to this day the company recognizes the value of its employees and our surrounding communities.
Our processing centers, largely based in North America, adhere to strict work policies to ensure safe and fair working conditions for our employees. A healthy workplace breeds a healthy respect to the world around us, and as such, our company and employees have a long history of shared community engagement. Each Samuel division supports their own local charities and projects through fundraising drives and volunteer work. The Samuel Group and The Samuel Family have a long-standing philanthropic legacy, including major contributions to causes supporting hospital charities and hospices, environmental protection, children’s charities, education programs, and the arts and culture. The Samuel name has helped shaped leading cultural and educational institutions, like that of the
Sigmund Samuel Library at the University of Toronto and by being one of the original creators of the
Royal Ontario Museum.
