Samuel has been a family owned and operated business since it was founded in 1855. The original company, known as M & L Samuel, was established by Lewis and Mark Samuel as a commission and wholesale business, that dealt in metal and hardware. This company operated out of offices in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and Liverpool, England.
The company enjoyed success and growth during the early years and in 1880 took on Alfred Benjamin as a partner and the company name was changed to M & L Samuel, Benjamin & Company. By the late 1880's Lewis Samuel's son Sigmund became president and soon after the company did away with the "shelf" hardware business and focussed on metals and heavy hardware. By 1912 Sigmund was a 50% partner and in 1929 the company moved from their offices and warehouse at Spadina and King to new facilities at the corner of Spadina and Fleet Streets in Toronto.
Upon the retirement of Frank Benjamin in 1931 Sigmund became sole proprietor and changed the name of his company to Samuel. In the late 1950's the company moved to it's current head office location on Dixie Road in Mississauga, Ontario and in 1962 a grandson of Sigmund, Ernest Samuel became president.
Samuel, under the leadership of Ernest, opened and acquired strategically located facilities throughout Canada and the United States. In 1985 three of the company's manufacturing divisions were combined to create a new company known as Samuel Manu-Tech Inc. The new company was taken public on the Toronto Stock Exchange and has also grown and seen great success. Samuel has retained a majority position in Samuel Manu-Tech.
Ernest passed away in 2000, having led the company for more than 38 years and seeing it become one of the top ten processors and distributors of metals in North America.
This family owned business continues its commitment to provide the best products and services from dedicated, skilled people. "We have a history we can be proud of and a strong future to look forward to"
